Perfect 16GB, i7 Ultrabook Laptop: Samsung Series 9

On April 15th, I posted about what I had thought to be the perfect laptop. I was looking at 32GB ThinkPad’s, which were going for around $2,000 – $2,500. But as I looked over at my Macbook Air, it did not take much convincing that I needed something similar to that, but much more powerful, and a slightly larger screen.

How do you get there? Add an Intel i7 processor, load it up with 16GB of RAM, and only allow SSD hard drives, and aim towards a 15-inch screen. But with none of these on the market today, it seems you have to do a little bit of work yourself to get it.

My solution today? The Samsung Series 9 has reported to have a 16GB of RAM release, but nothing has quite surfaced in the United States. If you open er up, you’ll see a place where you can make the upgrade yourself. Plus, the track pad works very similar, with some exceptions, to the Macbook Air. Therefore, ta-da, the perfect laptop.

RAM Upgrade:
Kingston HyperX 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600
Fits right into the Samsung Series 9 (NP900X4C)

What specific model do you have? I’m looking at reviews for the Series 9 with the 1080p display (Model: NP900X3E-A02US) and all the reviews I’m reading say the memory is soldered onto the board.

    • I have the NP900X4C-A03US, 15-inch. Every report of the 13-inch models have stated that the memory is soldered on. Btw, 1080p on a 13-inch screen is ridiculous!

If you think 1080p on a 13″ is ridiculous, you should check out the Chromebook Pixel. ;-) I picked one up shortly after I made my earlier comment (all of 11 months ago now, ha). It’s 2560×1700 on a 13″ and it’s absolutely fantastic.

My interest in the series 9 was mostly because of the ones that eventually came out with the really high resolutions (I believe they’re 3200×1800 or something similar?) For the work I do (software engineering), I really can’t stand laptops with only 1080p resolutions anymore. Unfortunately, with the Pixel I’m stuck with only 4GB of memory… but, the zram module tends to stretch that out quite a ways, so I manage to get by, surprisingly.

Anyway, thought I’d chime in on my thoughts about the higher res laptops. Sorry for the late reply (just realized you had commented on this!)

I have a variant of this machine in the UK. You said that it is possible to upgrade to 16Gb. I contacted Crucial and they say the memory is soldered and not possible to upgrade. I also clicked on the link you gave for the Kingston memory and was informed that this memory is no longer in stock. Could you kindly confirm that it is possible to replace the memory without de-soldering the existing RAM please?

Additionally, is it really possible to upgrade the processor to a i7 on the same motherboard?

Sorry if my questions sound naive. Thanks, Paul

I have just ordered 2X 8Gb Crucial units from Amazon. Crucial Also told me that the RAM is soldered, but on my UK machine it isn’t. In fact the opinion as to whether the machine is upgradable or not, varied from one Crucial on-line sales assistant to another. Not good Crucial. Additionally, Samsung state the maximum amount of RAM the series 9 can handle is 8GB.

Anyway, I have bitten the bullet and ordered it. I’ll keep you updated as an when the RAM arrives. Thanks for your previous posts. Paul
